Roots Blowers for Wastewater Treatment Plants
Roots Dresser blowers, now Howden™, are the core element to cover the aeration needs of your wastewater treatment plant, activated sludge process.
Roots has been the market reference for its premium quality and the longest tradition that dates back to 1860 (Roots).
Principle of Operation
The roots blower is a bi-lobed displacement type device. Two figure-eight shaped lobes are mounted on parallel shafts and rotate in opposite directions. Each time the impeller passes through the blower inlet, it entraps a finite volume of air and moves it around the casing to the blower outlet, where the air is discharged.
If the operating speed is constant, the displaced volume is the same regardless of pressure, temperature and barometric pressure.
Applications
The primary application for roots blowers is in activated sludge processes. They are used as a means of providing aeration (oxygenation) to wastewater treatment plants. Other applications include providing air in multi-media filters as a scrubbing and cleaning medium («air scouring») or in membrane degassing processes where they are used in reverse as a vacuum blower.
Roots Blower Package
A blower requires several components to operate, which is why it is often referred to as a blower package rather than a blower. Each blower package is selected and designed according to the specific needs of the customer. Blower packages have the following components:
- Roots Blower
- TEFC Motor
- Pulleys, Belts and Guard or Direct Coupling
- Elevated Common Support Base
- Inlet Air Filter
- Inlet Silencer*
- Outlet Silencer*
- Check Valve
- Relief Valve
- Flexible Connector
- Pressure Gauge
- Noise Isolation*
- Discharge Thermometer*
- Discharge Temperature Switch*
- VFD and Control Panel (optional)
