Multimedia Filters have a higher retention capacity than conventional sand filters, and currently represent the most widely used optimal option for removing sediment, mud, silt, oxides and suspended solid particles down to levels of 15-5 microns.
Multimedia Filters consist of a multi-layered bed with a gravel support. Particle removal is “deep” since it occurs throughout the entire bed, in all its layers.
Applications of Multimedia Filters
- Drinking water for homes and buildings.
- Water filtration for the food and beverage industries.
- Reverse Osmosis pretreatment.
- Drinking water for Hotels, Spas and Resorts.
- Filtration for Car Washes.
- Filtration for Laboratories.
- Well Water Treatment.
- Cooling Water Filtration.
Automatic Backwash Valve
Over time, the bed will become saturated with solids, producing an increase in the pressure drop across the filter and lower water production.
In order to continue operating, the filter will require backwashing, which is carried out by means of an automatic valve located at the top of the container, reversing the direction of flow through the bed.
Automatic backwashing removes the solids retained in each of the layers of filter media and carries them down the drain. This operation usually lasts ten to 15 minutes and must be carried out periodically, by time or volume of filtered water to ensure filter operation.
Clack Backwash Valve
The automatic Clack valve is standard on SWS supplies, but if you are already familiar with Pentair’s Fleck we carry that option.
For smaller systems the manual valve option is available.
Different Filter Media Options
Standard multimedia filter media consists of three layers on a bed of gravel, these are:
- Garnet
- Sand
- Anthracite
Multimedia filters can also be made with layers of sand and anthracite only and other patented media, such as Filter Ag. Ultimately, the selection of the filter media and its granulometry for each of the layers will depend on the characteristics of the water to be filtered.
Proper selection will ensure optimum performance and minimum backwash water consumption.
